There's a question I kept asking myself throughout our journey to Canada: How much of this outcome do we actually control?
Our family had options. We explored the business investor stream, startup visa, work permit — we consulted multiple immigration firms, sat through many analyses, weighed many paths. But our background was more complex than the typical profile. Most consultants couldn't offer a comprehensive solution — not because of incompetence, but because our file raised questions that had no ready-made answers.
At the time, startup visas and work permits were still far more accessible than they are today. But when we evaluated the full picture — how files are built, payment structures, eligibility requirements, outcome variables — one thing became clear, and it made us deeply uncomfortable: our level of agency over the result was very low. We'd invest money and time, but the outcome would largely sit outside our control.
That's when we chose the study route.
It wasn't a default choice made out of desperation. It was a deliberate decision, made after genuinely considering every alternative. And looking back now, I still believe it was one of the wisest decisions we made — not just in our immigration journey, but in our lives.
The province we chose was its own significant decision — but that's a story for another time.
So what did studying give us that the other paths couldn't?
The answer isn't just the visa or the PR pathway. It's what happened during that journey — the things you carry with you forever, regardless of where you end up.
